How I began my quest in fitness:
I was always active growing up. In college I kept in shape by dancing
on the dance team. I never would call myself very athletic though.
Sports never came easy to me and they still don't. After my 2nd year
in college I began to not be happy with my body. My brother offered
to take me to the gym and teach me how to lift. He promised I would
like it. Believe it or not, I have never stopped after that first day
at the gym. You will never see me miss a workout unless I am very
sick with the flu. Other then that you can find me at the gym. I
loved the results I was getting and it motivated me to continue. I
wanted to lean my legs out and get nice shapely shoulders and arms. I
gained a lot confidence through lifting and discovered a new passion
in my life.
Shortly after I began working out I knew I wanted to become a
personal trainer and educate others on the importance of fitness and
so I became an ISSA personal trainer. At this point all I did was
read and learn all I could about fitness. I also dreamed about
competing one day, but had no idea how I would ever be able to do
that. I still did not have that much muscle no matter how hard I
worked (I will get to that point later). My co-worker, Denise
Thompson convinced me to go after my dream of competing. I heard
there was a new division called "Figure", which was fitness
without the routine round and I knew I could handle that. So, I found
a trainer and did exactly what he advised me to, but the hardest part
was changing my diet! I grew up eating carbs and I wasn't about to
give them all up and eat a lot of protein, which I didn't even really
like. But as I said I wanted to do this so bad I changed my eating to
a high protein diet with small amounts of the proper carbs and like
magic I began putting on muscle and seeing my body change. I began
feeling better too. I learned a lot that first year of competing. It
became addicting and I wanted to do more shows even though I didn't
love the diet and how the training takes over your life, but I wanted
more. This was the start of my competing days. |
